The Price of Going Deeper

Walking with God is a journey of continual surrender. At the beginning, He may let you carry things—habits, relationships, old ways of thinking—that feel comfortable. But the farther you go, the more He asks you to lay down.

Why? Because deeper intimacy requires lighter baggage.

Think of Abraham. When God first called him, He said: “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” (Genesis 12:1).

Abraham couldn’t take it all with him. To step into promise, he had to step away from familiarity.

The same is true for us:

  • You can’t cling to bitterness and also carry breakthrough.
  • You can’t cling to control and also carry calling.
  • You can’t cling to everyone and also carry destiny.

The farther you go with God, the narrower the path becomes. And the narrower the path, the less you can carry.

Letting go often feels painful. You may wonder why God is removing people, opportunities, or comforts from your life. But the stripping is not punishment—it’s preparation.

Just like an athlete drops excess weight to run faster, God calls you to drop what slows you down so you can run your race with endurance (Hebrews 12:1).

What you lose in baggage, you gain in freedom.

What This Looks Like in Everyday Life

  • In business, it may mean choosing integrity over shortcuts, even if it costs you clients.
  • In relationships, it may mean releasing toxic ties so you can walk in peace.
  • In personal growth, it may mean laying down old thought patterns that no longer serve you.
  • In faith, it may mean trusting God’s leading instead of leaning on your own understanding.

Every layer you release makes room for God to reveal more of Himself.

How to Walk This Out

  • Ask God what He’s asking you to release. Don’t assume—listen. Sometimes it’s something subtle, like a mindset or hidden fear.
  • Loosen your grip daily. Surrender isn’t one-and-done; it’s a rhythm of trusting Him moment by moment.
  • See letting go as gain. What feels like loss is really exchange—your weakness for His strength, your plans for His purpose.
  • Travel light with gratitude. Thank God for what He’s allowed you to carry this far, even as He asks you to release it now.

The farther you go with God, the lighter you must travel.

It’s not because He wants you empty—it’s because He wants you free.

And when your hands are finally open, you’ll find they’re not empty at all—they’re ready to receive more of Him.
